Being an indie author for my debut book has got to be, without a doubt, one of the hardest tasks I’ve ever tried to accomplish. Every step of the way has revealed a new challenge for me to overcome. It has been entirely worth it, of course, but obviously very, very stressful. That is until I got to the interior formatting stage of the book. This should have been the MOST difficult part (I tried to do a little interior formatting myself for the ARC of my debut book which was an absolute hellscape nightmare of a time), but working with Mariska made this part of indie authoring a breeze. My goal as an indie author long term is to one day be able to help other indie authors publish their dream book, so as I go through this process I have been keeping track of the things I learn and the people I work with. Mariska has become my go-to person for interior formatting. She will never be rid of me, haha! So, this is it! The cover was designed by Mariska Maas from Rubre Art, and it went very smoothly. I was allowed by the publisher to contact her myself, after which Mariska asked me to tell her more about my characters. Based on that information she made 3 sketches for the front cover of my book, of which this one both me and my publisher loved. The title pops from the page and the characters are also very recognisable. The romance has been subtly added, yet they aren’t squished together like normally is done with romantic covers. That wouldn’t have been practical considering the nature of the story.

For the fifth edition of my novel Geestverwanten, I wanted to tweak the story here and there and have a new interior made. Unfortunately, I only had a PDF of the interior that I could not convert properly to Word myself without losing a great deal of the story. Through someone else I came into contact with Mariska, who made a Word version of the PDF in no time and assisted me in the rewriting process. Afterwards, she made an incredibly beautiful interior for my novel, and did so with great patience and personal attention. Heartwarming!
