Book Formatting & Typesetting – Mariska Maas

Interior Formatting

Why an Illustrated Interior Design?

While the cover might be your first step in the book design process, the interior is where readers truly spend their time. A thoughtfully illustrated design adds that little bit extra. The kind that enhances the reading experience and makes a book feel special.

From illustrated chapter openings to small decorative details, these touches are often what readers appreciate most, especially in a time where special editions are so well loved. They don’t distract from the story, but instead add to it.

If you’re looking for a polished and professional book interior with a little extra sparkle, you’re in the right place. Feel free to fill in the contact form and let’s see how we can bring your book to life. : )

Being an indie author for my debut book has got to be, without a doubt, one of the hardest tasks I’ve ever tried to accomplish. Every step of the way has revealed a new challenge for me to overcome. It has been entirely worth it, of course, but obviously very, very stressful. That is until I got to the interior formatting stage of the book. This should have been the MOST difficult part (I tried to do a little interior formatting myself for the ARC of my debut book which was an absolute hellscape nightmare of a time), but working with Mariska made this part of indie authoring a breeze. And God knows, I didn’t make it a simple job for her! I came with a vague idea of what I wanted my interior to look like and she quickly hit me back with the most gorgeous interior design. I just wrote a 400+ page book, but I am beyond words in the praise I’d sing for Mariska. She made sure every last detail was perfect. Then when it came time for me to turn it into my printing press (both KDP and a new press neither of us were familiar with) she went above and beyond to help me meet every single thing those presses needed. I always felt bad reaching out to her for ANOTHER change to the pdf but no matter how often I sent her an email asking for some new detail or fix she was always chipper and happy to aid me in my journey which made the process even easier for a people pleaser like me who feels distressed whenever my brain thinks I’m “bothering” somebody with something.

My goal as an indie author long term is to one day be able to help other indie authors publish their dream book, so as I go through this process I have been keeping track of the things I learn and the people I work with. Mariska has become my go-to person for interior formatting. She will never be rid of me, haha! Not only do I plan to hire her again for the sequels to my debut book, but moving forward she will be the designer I recommend to any indie author struggling to bring their dream book to life.

Working with Mariska was an amazing experience. All the love and effort that I put into my writing was met with the same care and dedication when she worked on my interior layout and endpapers. Her expertise during the process is a breath of fresh air–providing tailored options to get the creativity flowing, clearly communicating to ensure timelines were met, and welcoming feedback to ensure a harmony between text and design to make a truly one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Mariska is phenomenal to work with and is such a professional to the craft. She not only listened and encouraged my ideas and concepts when I was undergoing a huge interior formatting revision, but brought her own special touch to my book that absolutely elevated it. She kept me updated throughout the process, created her own designs, and finished both print and ebook copies before schedule. If you aren’t working with her yet, you need to! I’m excited to have her work on my next book and other future projects!

Rocio Carranza, author of the Eternal Curse series

I had the pleasure of working with Mariska on the interior illustrations of my debut book, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with the result. She is not only an exceptionally talented artist but also incredibly kind and easy to work with. Her professionalism shone through every step of the process, and her custom art perfectly captured the essence of my dark fantasy novel. Mariska brought the atmosphere to life in a way that exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Rubre Art to anyone seeking beautifully haunting and captivating illustrations.

Mariska is incredible! I had fumbled around with the lackluster interior design options Fiverr had to offer and just happened to (thankfully) run across her on TikTok. After seeing how passionate she is about the individuality and illustration of interior design, I wanted to reach out. I had a tight deadline since my edits took so long, but she worked with me to make it happen. In four days, she helped me bring to life the idea I have had in my head for the past two years! She is so attentive, knowledgeable, and talented! I hope to use her on all my future projects!
